The ISTP 9wing8: What is it?

What is the ISTP 9wing8? The “ISTP” is one of 16 personality types in the Myers-Briggs system.

  • I — Introversion. Energy directed inwards. Gains energy when alone. Lose energy when with people. Likes to do one thing at the time, as oppose to many things at once. Serious. Long-term thinker.
  • S — Sensing. Sensors orient themselves with the five senses. They are down to earth, and full of common sense. They are practical, and excel at pratical things. They aren’t “moved” by abstract things and theories.
  • T — Thinking. Thinkers are guided by rationality and logic, and take pride in this fact. They are tough and somewhat stubborn.
  • P — Perception. Perceivers are drawn to uncertainty, as oppose to certainty. They are drawn to the unknown. They are moldable, adaptable, and non-judgemental by nature. They are “open minded”, and don’t feel a need to label everything. They desire freedom, as oppose to structure. They delay making important decisions, as oppose to rushing them.

What is the 9wing8? The “9wing8” means you are an Enneagram Type 9 as your primary type, and have a Type 8 as your secondary type (also called “wing”). Ones primary type exists at roughly twice the strength of ones secondary type.

Can you see the 9 in the picture above? The Type 9 can either have the 1 as its wing, or the 8. Because they are placed on either side of it. Here is a basic introduction to the Type 9 and the Type 8.

THE PEACEMAKER: The Easygoing, Self-Effacing Type: Receptive, Reassuring Agreeable, and Complacent.

Nines are accepting, trusting, and stable. They are usually creative, optimistic, and supportive, but can also be too willing to go along with others to keep the peace.

They want everything to go smoothly and be without conflict, but they can also tend to be complacent, simplifying problems and minimizing anything upsetting. They typically have problems with inertia and stubbornness. At their Best: indomitable and all-embracing, they are able to bring people together and heal conflicts.

THE CHALLANGER: The Powerful, Dominating Type: Self-Confident, Decisive, Willful, and Confrontational.

Eights are self-confident, strong, and assertive. Protective, resourceful, straight-talking, and decisive, but can also be ego-centric and domineering. Eights feel they must control their environment, especially people, sometimes becoming confrontational and intimidating.

Eights typically have problems with their tempers and with allowing themselves to be vulnerable. At their Best: self- mastering, they use their strength to improve others’ lives, becoming heroic, magnanimous, and inspiring.

The ISTP 9wing8: The Fighter

The ISTP 9wing8 is a common personality type in martial arts. I will mostly focus on MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) since that is a special interest of mine.

The ISTP 9wing8 is calm, reserved but not shy, comfortable, confident, practical, good under pressure, efficient, and logical in a common sense kind of way.

This types “superpower” is energy efficiency, that comes from staying calm while having good technique. And if you stay VERY calm while having VERY good technique… at that point it becomes a superpower.

The ISTP is not conservative but the 9wing8 is, so there is a struggle there. The ISTP 9wing8 is not overly creative or neurotic, and this shows in their fighting style.

They are a “basics first, fundamentals wins fights” type of fighter. They can, however, end up a little too predictable and therefore get countered inside the cage. But this has not happened to Khabib (fortunately!).

The ISTPs impatience is countered by the patience of the 9, and this helps them function in society. They do, however, still need that adrenaline rush that comes from doing dangerous shit. If they have a somewhat mundane day job, they can resort to:

  • Extreme sports
  • Hardcore partying
  • Drugs

The “extreme sports” option is the only one allowed by his religion, I think. Khabib has mentioned several times he doesn’t really enjoy fighting anymore and he wants to get out.

I find him to be one of the most destructive and exciting wrestlers who ever competed in MMA. A lot of people say he’s the best ever. Can you imagine Khabib vs GSP?

Khabib is actually objectively speaking the best pressure wrestler that ever competed in MMA. The only person that ever came close was GSP, and he was an opportunistic wrestler.

Pressure wrestlers CREATES the opening by repetitive attacks, wearing down the opponent, while the opportunistic wrestler waits and goes at the best opportunity. Here are all of Khabibs UFC takedowns!

9wing8s have a dormant anger that can often be seen in their eyes. They give off a “Don’t fuck with me” energy. When the 9s calm and rational problem solving skills doesn’t work, the aggressive energy of the type 8 might come forward.

This is what happened when Khabib fought Conor McGregor. You know, when Khabib jumped out of the cage into the crowd like a man possessed? That has never happened before and might never happen again. Because the 9wing8 seldom gives in to their anger.

They do have a deep seated fear (almost a phobia) of getting physically dominated that comes from the Type 8. When Khabib was a boy, he wrestled a bear.

The ISTP

Personality Central: ISTP Introduction

ISTPs are quiet, observant doers who enjoy using their hands. They prefer to solve problems off the cuff; thinking about the best possible way that utilises the least amount of effort. They are flexible and adaptable people who are comfortable with change, in fact, they enjoy it.

They do not like traditional policies and procedures that they feel stifle them and often try to get around the rules to achieve higher efficiency. They prefer roles that require them to apply their analytical and logical thinking to solve a variety of practical problems. They tend to shy away from dealing with people’s emotions or personal problems, which they feel are unnecessary and tiring to deal with.

Let’s try it!

ISTPs are keenly observant people who are experts in the use of their five physical senses. They will make observations like small differences in taste, colour or texture which others may miss, but they won’t say them unless asked.

They prefer to learn by doing and are often highly dexterous. It is hard for them to grasp theory or ideas without immediate application, and this is why they don’t perform as well in the classroom.

ISTPs are excited by new experiences and like to immerse themselves fully in them. They do not like long-term commitments, which they see as a restriction on their freedom.

More on the ISTP

ISTPs apply their keen observations coupled with their analytical mind to problem-solve; using the precise facts they have gathered to create objective solutions. ISTPs use an internal, subjective yet logical system in their decision-making. All problems run through this system internally.

With this attribute, they may also come across as devil’s advocates. When everyone seems to agree, it is likely that ISTPs may raise alternative points of view as they put the problem through this internal logical system.

The 9wing8

The 9wing8 is very interesting. Because 9s despise confrontation, while the 8 handles confrontation better than any Enneagram type. The default state of the 9 is a calm problem solving state, while the default state of the 8 is being angry.

In Enneagram literature, the Type 9 is called “The Peacemaker”. It is ironic that the worlds biggest mancrusher is called “The Peacemaker” according to his personality type. I think he is a peacemaker, in his own home, and with his friends. He is still friends with all the people he grew up with in Dagestan. He always had a great relationship with his father.

The 9 is basically calm, while the 8 is basically angry. So 9wing8s are mostly calm, but a little angry. 9wing8s have a certain intensity that the 9wing1 lacks. They aren’t quite as patient as the very patient 9wing1.

Here is a little chart comparing the 9wing8 to the 9wing1. The 9wing8 is generally more serious than the more easygoing 9wing1, that’s one way to tell them apart.

It is generally believed that people in colder climates have a less emotional temperament. The stern Russian or eastern european man is an archetype for a reason. Well, this applies to Khabib as well, who is rather stoic for an ISTP 9wing8.
